Mendoza Wine Land

When you think of Mendoza, it’s almost impossible not to picture a glass of good Malbec with the Andes mountains in the background. This province is renowned for producing the highest quality wines in the country and the world. You can reach Mendoza from Buenos Aires by plane, which takes approximately two hours.

Wine Production

Mendoza is an ideal place for the production of red wine. This region has 76% of Argentina’s wine production and the largest number of vineyards in the country. This makes it the most important wine province in Argentina and one of the main production places in the world.

The main grapes here include Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Bonarda (also known as Charbono in Napa Valley). One of the factors that affects the wine quality is the altitude, because exposure to UV rays increases with increasing altitude. Another factor is the temperature, low temperatures help grapes to maintain acidity. Vineyard elevations in Mendoza range from about 1,400 feet to over 6,500 feet.

There are several regions to explore. Lujan de Cuyo is famous for its Malbec variety and is home to world-renowned vineyards where you can learn about the making process and meet the makers. The Uco Valley is highly recommended for tasting high-altitude wines at some of the best wineries. In addition to red, you can also sample other varieties such as rosé, white blends, and sparkling wine. Each vineyard offers high-quality wines to taste and pair with great cuisine, each producing different types from the same grapes. Besides vineyards and food, you can enjoy beautiful views of the majestic Andes mountains in Mendoza.

Mendoza is more than wine…

However, if you’re not into wine, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy, such as horseback riding through the vineyards, fishing for rainbow trout, kayaking, and thrilling rafting adventures in the rapids.

The city of Mendoza is very pedestrian-friendly; you can easily reach the main attractions on foot or by car. There are many green spaces due to the numerous squares. The primary square is Independencia square, located in the city’s center. Each corner of this square leads to another square: España Square, Italia Square, Chile Square, and San Martin Square, which features a large monument to our national hero. Plaza Independencia hosts a water and light show every evening in the fountain. The lights move in time with the music, creating an enjoyable spectacle. Occasionally, on weekend evenings, there are markets.

While visiting the San Martin square, you should check out the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo if you’re into contemporary art. To learn more about the city’s history, don’t miss the Museo del Área Fundacional, which showcases how Mendoza recovered after the 1861 earthquake that destroyed many historic buildings. Here, you’ll see the remains of the Cabildo and the San Francisco church. For a great panoramic view of the city, head to Cerro de la Gloria.

In the vicinity of Mendoza, be sure to visit the Cacheuta thermal baths. Located one hour from the city, this park is open to the public and features natural pools with breathtaking views. Another great site to visit is Villavicencio, just 50 kilometers from the city. It is a private natural reserve that safeguards the spring water reserve and offers various activities such as trekking and off-road adventure trips.

Finally, if you visit Mendoza, you can’t miss the Aconcagua Provincial Park. Here is where you will get the best photos of the Aconcagua Mount, one of the highest in the world and the highest of the American continent, standing at 6960 meters above sea level. On the road to get to this park, you will pass through the Puente del Inca, a natural monument that is worth a visit because of its singularity.
