This magic mountain town is located in the Southern Patagonia, within the Los Glaciares National Park (Santa Cruz Province), in a valley where the rivers De las Vueltas and Fitz Roy meet, as a result, Chalten is enclosed between rivers and mountains. Cerro Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre are a challenge for climbers around the world, consequently, mountains are the predominant figures in the landscape of El Chalten, which offers many trekking options among lengas and ñires forests, beautiful lakes, rivers and hanging glaciers that you can explore with your local guide. Let’s enjoy this main destination of our Southern Patagonia itinerary!

Day 1: Arriving to El Chalten
Buenos Aires & Patagonia Argentina

Take your flight to El Calafate Airport where the local driver will be waiting for you to take you to El Chalten. While in the way you will enjoy the Patagonian Steppe landscape with its lakes, rivers and native fauna like the guanacos. A few kilometers before reaching the town you will begin to see the impressive mountain peaks that enclose this charming place. Once you arrive you can enjoy the rest of the day walking around this magical town of the Southern Patagonia.

Day 2: Fitz Roy Trekking Day

Arrive to the base of Mount Fitz Roy, walking into the lengas and ñires forest, crossing streams and rivers, watching hanging glaciers immersed in a surprising landscape. First of all, you will go by car accompanied by the local guide to the starting point of the trail at El Pilar Hotel, and from this point you will start an 8-hour hike into the forest, during which you will watch the Piedras Blancas Hanging Glacier, a great variety of typical flora and fauna, and you will cross streams and rivers, always accompanied by the impressive view of Monte Fitz Roy wich will be getting closer and closer until we reach the its base in Laguna de Los Tres.

The last hour of the hike is very intense and with a steep slope, so you will be able to decide with your guide which part of the path to cross. Finally, you will descend from Laguna de los Tres and return to El Chalten by foot along the Laguna Capri Trail.

Day 3: Torre Mount Trekking Day

The second day you will walk the Cerro Torre trail. It runs along beech forest, bogs and shrubland and leads to Laguna Torre, enclosed by moraines and with Glacier Grande calving in its west side. The path starts from the village from where you will begin your walk accompanied by the local Guide of the Los Glaciares National Park. This is a quiet walk of approximately 9 hours round-trip, with a slight slope in the first minutes, you will walk following the course of River Fitz Roy. The tour will allow you to appreciate the landscape of the Fitz Roy River Canyon, and contemplate various waterfalls. Little by little you will start to have beautiful views, closer and closer of the Mount Torre. During the tour you can see majestic panoramic views. Stops will be made according to the climatic conditions and your interests.

Day 4: Loma del Pliegue Tumbado Trekking and Travel to El Calafate

You will take to one of the less traveled but very stunning hikes in the Southern Patagonia on the Loma del Pliegue Tumbado trail to access a 360 ° view point from where you can appreciate the valleys of Fitz Roy, Torre y Toro, the Patagonian steppe and the gigantic Lake Viedma. It’s a full day hike as you walk from Chalten to the summit of this mountain. The first section of the trail climbs the slopes of the mountain and winds through steppe and forest eventually breaking through to the tree line.

After an hour of hiking uphill and crossing small streams and groves of Ñires and Lengas, you arrive to your first viewpoint from where you’ll have spectacular views of both Cerro Torre and Fitz Roy massifs and their valley between. As you continue on you will be walking on screen and feeling the full force of the winds to reach the summit cone and eventually the summit. Here you are rewarded by additional views of the surrounding mountains which include Paso del Viento and the Mariano Moreno range in the Southern Ice Field. You will get back to El Chalten in the afternoon to travel to El Calafate.

DAYS 5 - 6

Located on the shore of Lake Argentino, in the middle of the Patagonian Steppe, El Calafate is one of the most important tourist centers in Argentina and Southern Patagonia. This picturesque tourist village is the gateway to the Southern Section of Los Glaciares National Park and its most famous attraction, the Perito Moreno Glacier. In addition to the Continental Ice and its various glaciers, you can enjoy other activities such as trekking, 4×4, horseback riding, kayaking, rating, fishing, sailing among others. From El Calafate you can visit a wide variety of Patagonian Estancias, where it is possible to stay or spend a country day and appreciate the typical rural activities of the area, taste a roast of lamb ad enjoy the peace and vastness of Patagonia.

Day 5: Ice Trekking over the Perito Moreno Glacier
Southern Patagonia

Walk over the Perito Moreno Glacier, one of the World’s Natural Wonder, which flows down from the Southern Patagonia Icefield, a big sheet of ice, is the third largest glacier area over the world. The excursion starts at the “Bajo las Sombras” port, located approximately 6 km from the Perito Moreno Glacier balconies. You will embark to cross the Rich Arm of Lake Argentino, arriving at the southwest coast after approximately 20 minutes of navigation.
After the disembarking, you will start a walk of about 20 minutes along the lakeshore until we reach the glacier, where the guides will put the crampons on the the participants’ shoes and give a small talk explaining how you should move on the ice. The route over the glacier takes about 01:30 hours and, during the tour, you can appreciate a variety of ice formations such as cracks, seracs, sinks, small lagoons, etc. The walk is moderate and the ice surface you walk on is irregular, but firm and secure. At the end of the walk, you will return to port of departure where your vehicle will be waiting for you to take you to the balconies before returning to the city of El Calafate.

Day 6: Nibepo Aike Patagonian Ranch
Southern Patagonia

This Estancia is one of the first in the region and is located at the end point of Provincial Route N° 15, route of the estancias, on the shores of Lake Roca, at the southern end of the Los Glaciers National Park, in an exclusive natural environment, surrounded by mountains, lakes and forests. Estancia Nibepo Aike invites you to travel in time, observing the activities that were the sustenance of the ancient inhabitants of the region and, which this estancia, continues realizing, enjoying also majestic panoramic views. Spend one night in the ranch, enjoy demonstrations of equestrian activities such as sheep herding with dogs and shearing, go hiking with your guide, take a horseback ride and taste an exquisite lamb barbecue. This program is perfect to participate in the Patagonian rural life and complements the visit to the glaciers in Southern Patagonia.

Located a few kilometers from Puerto Natales, in southern Chile, Torres del Paine National Park is considered one of the most beautiful places over Southern Patagonia and the world and one of the best trekking areas. Day 7: Arrive to Torres del Paine

Cross the border into Chile, enjoying the Patagonian Steppe scenery during your journey from El Calafate to your lodge in Torres del Paine National Park. After crossing the border to Chile through Cerro Castillo, a small village near the Chilean border, you will get your first views of the Paine massif, and upon entering the park, you will be able to see small herds of guanacos, wild local animals. You will continue to the Sarmiento Park Station where you will start the first trekking trail to the Laguna Amarga Park station. Then you will go to the campsite located beneath the Paine Towers.

Day 8: Paine Towers Base Trekking Day

Enjoy a full day guided trekking to the base of Paine Towers. You will take the path that crosses the Asencio River and then follow the right bank of the river. A full day amazing adventure through forests, rocky moraines and hanging glaciers, all surrounding by beautiful turquoise streams and rivers and the stunning peaks of Paine Massif.

Day 9: Navigation at Pehoé Lake and French Valley Trekking

Take a 30 minutes catamaran ride to cross the Pehoé Lake. Once at the other side you will start the trekking trail to the French Valley, crossing the French River and following the path through the base of Pine Grande peak. The route takes you through lenga forests and a few small creeks. As you gain altitude, you will scramble through rocky sections of the mountain’s boulder moraines to a breathtaking lookout point. On a clear day, you will have fantastic views of the high peaks that surround us from this extraordinarily beautiful landscape. You will came back by the same trail and take the catamaran to come back to your lodge.

Day 10: Grey Glacier Viewpoint and Travel to El Calafate

This day you will visit one Grey Glacier viewpoint and the Grey Valley, which flows down around 60 km from the Patagonian Ice Field itself, featuring the huge Grey Glacier invading the lake on its north side. The hike wil be throught the shore of Grey Lake, in a beatifull beach inmersed in a wondefull landscape surrounded by the Paine Massif. After the hikking you will came back to El Calafate to tke your flight to Ushuaia.

Day 11: Arriving to Ushuaia

Take your flight to Ushuaia Airport where the local guide will be waiting for you to take you to your hotel while you take some time to see to the city during the way. So once you arrive you can enjoy the rest of the day by your own, visiting the downtown or relaxing at the hotel.

Day 12: Trekking and Canoeing at Tierra del Fuego National Park

Visit Tierra del Fuego National Park in an unconventional way, and combine two activities inside an amazing natural environment. It includes a trekking through the coastal path, ideal for watching wildlife, and a canoeing tour down the Lapataia River up to the Lapataia Bay, the endpoint of the National Route Nº 3. While the journey you will probably see aquatic birds and sometimes, even sea mammals. Once the trekking starts, you walk through archaeological sites, the famous shellfish fossils piles-souvenirs from the old inhabitants of the region, the Yamanas. These were sea nomads who are almost entirely gone today. After 3-4 hours trekking you will reach Lake Roca, where you will stop to enjoy a country style lunch and then, start the canoe/ duckies trip down the Lapataia River.

Day 13: Trekking to Esmeralda Lagoon

Let’s enjoy a quiet trekking to Esmeralda Lagoon with beavers sightseeing. You will  move away from the Beagle Channel and discover one of the main valleys of the island. There you begin the walk through a peat area until we reach a forest of lenga trees, crossing dams of beavers and up a stream that leads us to the Esmeralda lagoon, nestled between mountains, where you will delight your snack with the glaciers behind us. On the way back, you will take advantage of the long summer evening to live intimately with the landscape while we wait for the beavers to show themselves in their evening chores.
